Kol Calling
I often find myself saying that given a chance I would go back to Kolkata, the city of my birth, in a heartbeat. So why didn’t I? Well, because I have felt opportunities were not good enough... Not anymore! In the last 4-5 years, Calcutta, or Kolkata, has been undergoing a subtle but tangible transformation.
About three years ago, as the marketing and communications head of a prestigious brand, I had the responsibility of re-launching it in Kolkata. I had planned for a fashion show in the store but was anxious. I need not have been. Hair and makeup was spot on and quick. The six models were not ‘simple Bengali beauties’; they had the spunk and confidence of their Delhi-Mumbai counterparts. Without fuss they did four changes and sashayed through the event, slaying it.
Dr Jessica Gomes, school principal, successful model and a choreographer, (yes, you got her credentials right!) says, “The fashion industry in the city has grown in leaps and bounds. Today, when we speak of designers, we needn’t restrict ourselves to only Sabyasachi and Anamika. We have many talented designers who are creating a niche for themselves.”
It’s not just designers who have changed the game, it’s the models, the talented photographers and makeup artistes that have helped the city gain attention. Models such as Shubhamita Banerjee, Sona Goldar, Sonal Srivastava, Diti Saha or Sneha Ghosh all score high on glamour and style.
